Movin’ Melvin Brown – A Man, A Magic, A Music Live! (Movin’ Melvin Brown)
By Hilary White | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Movin’ Melvin sings, twists and taps his way through a whirlwind tour of Black music history, simultaneously telling the story of his career. It’s a story so remarkable and diverse that as a result the show incorporates both a rapturous gospel church service – ‘Amen!’ and ‘Right on, Reverend!’ emanates from the now-standing, clapping audience as Melvin preaches then dances through the aisles. There is even a surprisingly thorough striptease for one flustered volunteer. Though a necessary measure to fit in so much, cutting the songs short makes them slightly unfulfilling, and the show can feel a bit too structured and over-rehearsed. Nonetheless, this multi-talented showman is just the ticket to put a beaming smile on your face – magically, musically, joyously entertaining.
