Tweeting Beauty (And Other Stories) (Paul B. Edwards / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Jennifer Ajderian | Published on Saturday 27 August 2011
Paul Edwards’ self-imposed challenge of re-telling fairytales for the modern day is usually just that – repeating the synopsis he’s already given with more modern phrasing. His attempts to modernise these classic stories are accompanied by a prop or piece of costume, like the policeman’s helmet worn by the officer reading out the Troll’s complaint about the Three Billy Goats Gruff. Though these are well-imagined, Edwards reads each story directly from his script, meaning he can’t move freely around his stage. Past the highlight of his sock-puppet nephew’s comments on ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, again read verbatim from the script, this was a frank modern-day perspective, but not one that would keep us quiet till bedtime.
