Saving Seatown: The Underwater Musical! (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

The Fringe is as much an international event as it is artistic showcase, so the presence of these young performers from the American High School Theatre Company wonderful. However, ‘Saving Seatown’ – the first piece in a student writing project – is lacklustre. Set underwater, it follows the battle between villainous Dr Eight and superheroes the Fishtastic Five. Technical problems mean the play is quiet; nobody’s fault but unfortunately dampening nonetheless. Both the theatrical and lyrical writing isn’t memorable, and some of the singing and direction could use polish. But while it feels closer to school shows than professional theatre, the creators are still learning their craft. With enthusiastic acting, great costumes and funny moments, it shows promise.

Church Hill Theatre, 20 – 23 August, times vary, £5.00, fpp232.
