Maxwell uses Fringe to launch Alpine comedy fest

It was winter at the Udderbelly this afternoon, and not just because of the return of the customary Edinburgh rain. The Abattoire, Underbelly’s new members bar, was decked out for winter to mark the official launch of the 2012 Altitude Comedy Festival, the comedy fraternity’s winter fest that takes place in Austria each March. Altitude’s curator, Fringe favourite Andrew Maxwell, was on hand to promote the snow-sports-and-comedy event, which took place for the first time earlier this year.

Other Fringe favourites lined up for next year’s Altitude include Jimmy Carr, Al Murray, Ed Byrne, Kevin Bridges, Tim Minchin, Milton Jones, Craig Campbell, Marcus Brigstoke and ThreeWeeks Editors’ Award winning Terry Alderton. The latter joined Maxwell earlier today at the Midlothian Wintersports Centre to officially unveil next year’s dates and initial line up.

Commenting on his involvement in the wintery comedy fest, Maxwell told ThreeWeeks: “Getting to snowboard all day, and to enjoy my comedian mates on stage and back-stage all night is like a week long, snowy, fantasy island for me”. He possibly said some other stuff, but by this point the free mulled wine and apple strudel was distracting us somewhat.

And look out for more Maxwell in ThreeWeeks later this month. With his show ‘Andrew Maxwell: The Lights Are On’ playing at Assembly George Square, we’ve recruited him for the role of Guest Editor on our Week Two issue, the results of which will be on the street next week.
