Working The Devil (Dog Kennel Hill Project / Escalator East To Edinburgh)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Laden with dark and self-reflexive humour, ‘Working The Devil’  is amusing, yet pleasingly eccentric. There is no real plot here; the first half of the performance comprises of just a dictatorial choreographer, a conformist dancer and a human beat box, while a ridiculous sort of interpretative dance makes up the second half. Slightly too abstract and repetitive at times, it occasionally feels somewhat long-drawn, especially when Hinterview takes over, and monotonous ‘dance’ sequences begin to lose their meaning. The latter is made more bearable, however, by the general underlying absurdist sentiment. Nonetheless, although it is particularly commendable in the first half, it proves to be an entertaining and innovative piece on the whole.

Zoo Roxy, 22 – 27 Aug, 12.45pm (1.45pm), £6.00 – £8.00, fpp179.
