Agamemnon By Steven Berkoff (Muchmuchmore Theatre Company)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

From the very first scene, this play is breathtaking. Clothed in rags and covered in mud, the cast of 11 act out the life of Agamemnon – from his father’s bloody rise to power to the horrors of the Trojan war – with vivid imagery and movement. At times it almost feels like a dance, as fire is personified, and battle and rape become visceral. Steven Berkoff’s script serves as a medium for this group to display their talents; their ability to mix movement and dialogue, switching between fight scenes and narration is impressive. The line between overacting and acting well is a thin one, but with such a challenging piece I think they pulled it off with emotion and poise.
