Decadence (Sweet Grassmarket)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

“Daaaaarling that’s fab.” Vista Theatre pulls off this production of Steven Berkoff’s ‘Decadence’ with aplomb. This provocative satire of the British class system is full of debauchery and the two actors throw themselves head-first into their roles, portraying two lascivious couples at opposite ends of society. There’s a sense of intimacy in the small space and the sparse and simple use of scenery is effective. The piece, with its lively movement and clever wordplay, is enthralling and entertaining throughout but if you are unfamiliar with the play it can, at times, be difficult to follow. This production is pretty out there: a bit raunchy, a bit naughty, and certainly not for the prudish. Well worth a look.
