Othello? (Deux Ex Machina Productions)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Even Shakespeare’s tragedies can contain light moments; however, this piece didn’t get that. Thus, in a clumsy effort to squeeze out some comedy, the Shakespearian language is simply laughed at. One feels as if Deux Ex Machina decided they wanted to be credited with putting a twist on the tragedy with no actual understanding of the play and its complexities. The make-up is incomprehensible, the costume confused, the characters crude and the lighting far too bright for such a large space. The two female leads – Desdemona and Emelia – make the best of the hammy acting; indeed, they would be quite good if they weren’t directed so appallingly. It’s not big, it’s not clever and it’s certainly not funny.
