Peep Show (Allthepigs Theatre Company)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Sunday 28 August 2011
Crossing the stage to take their seats, the audience gets a chance to peer into the lives of the characters they’re about to observe; seven distinct and conflicted neighbours, lovers and loners. Their individual stories are glimpsed through fragmented, low key domestic scenes which blur together as events unfold, and while the set-up is as familiar as the intentionally banal dialogue, the whole feels greater than the sum of its parts. The cast is natural and engaging, while fluid direction and a resonant script create an absorbing dynamic which outweighs the occasional lack of focus. Slowly and stealthily building an atmosphere of tension and longing, the company confidently deliver a thoughtful, humorous and human play with a powerful emotional charge.
Greenside, 15 – 27 Aug (not 21), times vary, £5.00 – £7.00, fpp287.
