The Dead! (The Young Actors Company)
By Leonie Sheridan | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
Zombies – who’d have ’em, eh? Can’t live with them, can’t kill them; they provide something of a circular plot. The Young Actors Company have sought to enliven this by introducing multiple endings. The audience vote via questionnaire at the beginning of the show which route they’d take in the face of zombie apocalypse. It’s the theatre equivalent of that perennial pub question “What would you do if…?” It even provides the same silly satisfaction. However, apart from this, little else about the performance is particularly satisfying: the jokes are hackneyed, and, while the use of zombies to act as different bits of set was amusing, it was hardly innovative staging. I left feeling utterly zombified.
