The Ice Fishing Play (American High School Theatre Festival)

By | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011

Ron just wants to be alone with the fish, but he finds that running from his memories doesn’t mean they won’t follow. In a touching play which jumps around its own timeline, we see the loneliness of a man surrounded by people. The young cast tackles the script well, but the occasional fumbled delivery and awkward motion marks this as an amateur production. In nearly an hour, we don’t go anywhere; instead, Ron reflects on things that have happened and things he has lost. However, Sophie Bauer’s Irene, the fisherman’s wife, is sweet and wholly convincing. The short run leaves them time to smooth out the creases somewhat so that this brave and charming storyline can shine through.
