The Three Lives Of Lucie Cabrol (Italia Conti BA Acting Ensemble 2011)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Sunday 28 August 2011
Lucie Cabrol may be the title character of this slow burning, delightfully melancholic love story, but in truth, the lead is Jean. It’s just as well, then, that Eugene Malone infuses Jean – the difficult narrator’s role – with warmth, love and regret in perfectly judged measures. The plot meanders, following Lucie and Jean’s love throughout life and death whilst taking the time to build a wry, gentle picture of French peasant life. The three Lucies are all excellent, although it would have benefited from being a single role. The other minor flaw was that the slightly overblown artistic direction was occasionally self-conscious, and hampered the supporting cast. Humorous and sad, this production is a genuinely moving ode to love, life and death.
