Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind (American High School Theatre Festival)
By Jennifer Ajderian | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
By calling their selection of thirty plays “Neo-Futurist”, this school group makes attempts at surrealism that never really hit the mark. Half the time we’re uncertain whether what we’re watching is supposed to be funny, a serious piece of theatre, or a group of kids seeing what they can do with a stage and some sound cues. The shorts which do work are the truly surreal, such as the orange which was simply rolled onto stage, or those which used tried-and-tested techniques, like the reduced Shakespearian comedy. Though the concept of audience-selected short plays performed at random is a good one, the plays themselves are unsatisfying: some are too short, others far, far too long.
