The Scientist In Fiction – Creative Or Crazed Genius? (Edinburgh International Book Festival)

The way scientific advances and their uses are shown in books, films and television will inevitably influence public opinion. This event enabled a thought-provoking discussion on the portrayal of the scientist in fiction, and the roles they play for each other. Aired were the viewpoints of a scientist (Dr Alistair Elfick), an author (Sophie McKenzie) and chair Dr David Kirby (who is both), so we were treated to insights on what scientists really do and how writers approach science and sci-fi. Audience questions also brought some interesting answers. Well-pitched for an audience whose ages ranged from seven-year-olds to adults, this event was a refreshing, fascinating window into a hot topic.
