Scotch Broth (Dennis Alexander)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

Going to ‘Scotch Broth’ as an English woman did feel a little like I was trespassing into a secret society specifically for Scottish children. Leading rousing renditions of songs I’ve never heard south of the border, like ‘Coulter’s Candy’ and ‘The Wee Kirkcudbright Centipede’, was singer and guitarist Dennis Alexander. He managed to be both quite fun and a bit awkward, though assuring the audience they only had to make it through another 45 minutes isn’t quite the right type of self-deprecation! However, there were a lot of lovely touches like illustrated postcards, a beautifully decorated backdrop and kazoos, which added to the inclusiveness of the sing-along (though it did feel like the parents got more out of it than the kids).
