Giant Talking Cat – Free Festival (Chris Johnstone)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

We’re all tired at the end of the Fringe, but Chris Johnstone seems more battered than most; at the end he doesn’t even ask for donations. It is impressive that he painted on those whiskers and made it to the show, but the subsequent execution is haphazard: He abandons jokes, forgetting the punch-line, and later returns to them when he’s remembered more. The original concept is that he is a cat persuading us why, as the song goes, everybody wants to be a cat, and there are in fact glimmers of a potentially good show here: there are some amusing cat observations and it is peculiarly enjoyable to be in his company. But given its star’s demeanour, it seems now more of a case study in how the Festival can break a man.
