In Vino Veritas (Robert Inston)

Wine’s proverbial ability to reveal the true nature of its drinkers was combined with an audience wine-tasting session in this solo show that did not realise its entertainment potential. Inston’s lyrical invocations of characters like Blanche from ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and a generic Frenchman were supposed to satirise the effects of alcohol, but were instead pointless ramblings that, though poetic, wasted the performer’s talent. Though the informative tasting session and an amusing analogy between men and wine showed promise, the rest of the show lacked direction. Inston failed to elicit the audience contributions he banked on and was adamant we were underwhelmed because his usual musical accompaniment was missing. I’m unconvinced music alone could rescue this flawed show.
