Rick Shapiro – Rebirth (Assembly and Marshall Cordell)
By Lauren Houghton | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
An awkward and really quite saddening show by a man who didn’t seem well enough to be on stage. The Fringe programme mentions Shapiro’s amnesia-causing car accident, but fails to reveal the fact he’s just got out of hospital after severe cardiac issues. On stage he was shaking and stuttering his way through a rather incoherent routine and it really didn’t seem like he was fit enough to be there. He often tailed off and left jokes without a punchline – sometimes returning to them later, sometimes not. Once in a while he did manage some amusing anecdotes, such as the story of the zucchini muffin lady, but more often his controversial topics were just uncomfortable.
Assembly George Square, 1-27 Aug (not 13), 6.10pm.
