Santa’s Dead And We Have Killed Him (Owen Hughes / PBH’s Free Fringe)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

The show is sold as “stand-up comedy without the jokes” and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Performed as a sort of dramatic monologue, Owen Hughes’ short set tracks how Santa has effectively ruined his life. Analysing popular Christmas songs like ‘I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus,’ to show how Santa is in fact a creepy old pervert, and quoting passages from Exodus, Hughes’ show had me utterly confused as to its purpose. I couldn’t work out whether he was expecting laughs or really did just want to make his audience feel awkward and uncomfortable. As he breaks down in tears whilst portraying his former child-self, even he didn’t seem to feel at ease on stage.
