The Ejaculate Conception (The Gubernaculum)
By Holly Close | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
It starts so promisingly: a well-paced sketch about an unemployed CBeebies presenter. Unfortunately, from there a series of major issues begin to surface in ‘The Ejaculate Conception’, which even the strongest sketches can’t recover from. Consistently smug, often anti working class and frequently misogynistic, The Gubernaculum is doing nothing to help the generally incorrect accusation that Oxbridge comedy is elitist and out-of-touch. If there is any irony about their sexist bankers and poor use of their token woman actress, then it was completely underplayed and I missed it. Either way, while there might be a few kernels of comedy lurking in this show, the effort of searching for them is not worth it.
