Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells For Two (places+spaces and Assembly)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This masterpiece of a claustrophobic cacophony of composition is beautifully performed by only two people. There might have been a little electronic help in creating the impossible, but in no way would that take away from the excellence of the performance. All the instruments were there, and played, including the tubular bells. And drums. And whistles. And guitars, lots of guitars. Acoustic, electric, Spanish, bass, mandolin… the works, you name it; it’s a wonder no one got injured while running and moving between the instruments on stage. The pair had one break – when the record was turned over. A tour de force of coordination, sweat and skill that was received with a thunderous storm of applause by the appreciative audience.

Assembly George Square, 2-27 Aug (not 13, 20), 9.00pm.
