Music Of Les Miserables And West End Musicals (Dysart Productions)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

Dysart Productions’ initial X Factor-inspired premise is a promising one. Audience members are approached by fellow ‘auditionees’ and ‘casting directors’ who offer sage advice about breathing techniques and song choice. After this, things start to come apart. At best, the solo performances are assured, but it’s a general lack of expression and emotional connection with the music that really lets the performance down. The show’s saving graces come in the shape of an appropriately hammy rendition of ‘Master of the House’, and soloists George Mulryan and Melissa Hovelle, who both have stunning and powerful voices. Otherwise, the show stays firmly in the category of ‘bland musical revue’. Unfortunately, I don’t think many of them will be progressing to Boot Camp.
