Spring Awakening (Act Up Theatre Company USA)
By Lia Sanders | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
This story of teen angst in Nineteenth Century Germany is given a deeper significance by being performed by actual adolescents. The cast’s singing is impressive if the acting variable, though what really deserves praise is the astounding gymnastic choreography which they execute with ease and grace. Trevor Larson gives a very fine performance as the charismatic Melchior, balancing intellect beyond his years with all the awakening emotions of the teenage boy, yet Jorie Ann Kosel is definitely his equal as Wendla, with a sensitive and innocent portrayal that never slips over into Disney Princess saccharine. Perhaps some of the more extreme issues are slightly unconvincing, however, if teen woe-athons are your bag you are almost certain to enjoy this.
