The Ring Of Stones (Salford Charter Players)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

It’s 1665 and, faced with threat of a plague epidemic, the villagers of Eyam are forced to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to contain the deadly disease. This musical is on the whole very well executed. Simple but clever choreography and staging ensure that a degree of theatrical tension is maintained throughout, and the cast are strong singers, making the ensemble numbers in particular very powerful. Though quite dramatic as stand-alone pieces, the songs themselves don’t drive the story, and as a result the show felt a little slow. Nevertheless, ‘The Ring Of Stones’ is an impressive amateur production, and an interesting look at a dark but little-known piece of English history.
