High North Movement (Haugen Productions – Norway)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Definitely a very interactive performance; it begins with the performer inviting the audience onto the stage to “move” to the “north” – two keywords that capture the soul of this show. I find it hard to define what I see: it’s sort of a colourful combination of stand-up comedy, performance art, political statement, cinematic experience and modern dance. At times I find it hard to follow the well-performed hysterical singing (and/or screaming), and occasionally I find it patronising and intimidating, but I love Marina Abramovic; I respect the meaning conveyed in her performance art. However, the stage appears hectic even with just the performer herself on it, and the meanings and good wishes for a sustainable future for the “Northern link” get lost in the middle. Despite all this, it’s still an interesting idea.
