Natyam (Mythili Prakash And Ensemble)

It’s always good to see something ‘exotic’, something different; it’s also visually stunning, thanks to the dancer’s costume, style, eyes, the light, and the shadows cast by the violin and the drum. In the first piece, which aims at evoking the sun, she moves as if rising from the shadow and holding the golden rays of sunshine, making this seem more like a breathtaking revival of an ancient ritual rather than a dance performance. What is more interesting is the really clever way that history, myths, legends and the modern present are combined: lyrics are read from a Mac, explaining the dance and the mythological background. It is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time, the music, and the singing. Without understanding the lyrics, we are completely drawn into the wild imagination the performers present; time and space, reality and myths, collapse. The most enjoyable 45 minutes.
