Young China Shines (Beijing No.4 High School)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

China has always been bit of a mystery yet at the same time a cliché to the West. On one hand people here seem to be familiar with its stereotypical image as a country with growing economy, dangerous ideology and sneaky rules, on the other hand how the Chinese actually live their lives is still unknown. This performance, albeit a typical treat for ‘Westerners’, sheds light on how the younger generation of China (teenagers to be more precise) adapt and interpret the modern world while trying to maintain a traditional identity. The magnificent Chinese instrumental orchestra, beautiful ribbon dance and Peking opera, are all skilfully performed by those talented high school students. In itself, it seems to be perfect illustration and metaphor for contemporary China: ambitious, farraginous, and in transition.
