Often seen on stage improvising in a musical fashion as part of The Showstoppers, Lucy Trodd and Ruth Bratt debut their own character sketch show at the Fringe this year as part of the Free Festival programme. “Deliciously dark and very funny” said Rob Brydon, and that’s good enough for us. The girls kick things off by tackling the Quick Quiz.
TW: Tell us about your 2012 show in no more than 60 words.
T&B: It’s called ‘Well Done You’. We thought of the title first and then tried to make our show about it. Hmmm. We do character comedy, largely based around the costumes we find. We are women and one of us if bigger than the other- what more can you ask for?
TW: Tell us about another show or performer you’re looking forward to seeing this year.
T&B: We’ve been lucky enough to share the stage with the painfully funny Holly Burn (at Just The Tonic at The Caves). If we lived on a comedy street, she’d be our neighbour for sure (the one wandering around in her jumpsuit for pajamas and pouring water on her hair). For us, Holly is raw and unusual in all the good ways. She’s also a bit blind too, so if you don’t like it, you can pull faces and she’ll never know.
TW: How will you be preparing for the Fringe this year?
T&B: Trodd has taken her Yogalates DVD off of the shelf and moved it nearer to her computer. Bratt has been retraining her body clock to stay up until 4am… by staying up until 4am.
TW: What advice would you have for someone coming to the Fringe for the first time?
T&B: Watch everything you can. Seek out the Laughing Horse Free Festival. Pack your waterproofs and walking boots. Gin is a depressant – don’t learn this the hard way. Don’t share a room with more than 12 people.
TW: If your show was an Olympic sport, what would it be and why?
T&B: What sports are in the Olympics? Netball? Netball should be there for Trodd. She likes to think she’ll be called up to play “goal keep” at any moment. Bratt would like cake lifting to be an Olympic event. We did an improvised synchronised swimming routine in this year’s London 50 hour Improvathon. So we’d probably have to settle for Rowing (the argument kind, not the boat-based activity).
