24h (Waclaw Miklaszewski / Szwalnia Theatre)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Sitting in a Perspex cube in a darkened room, performance artist Waclaw Miklaszewski seems at ease. It’s surprising, since he’s spending an entire day in there during this longitudinal installation, which intentionally stretches the definition of theatre. He passes the time with hypnotic a cappella droning and, occasionally, a few words. These fragments may be suggestions of character or narrative, but they’re nothing more than that. Despite the omnipresent ticking of a clock, you quickly lose all sense of time and place, like floating in a sensory deprivation chamber. The effect isn’t helped by the crew members dozing around the space. Ultimately, the most interesting part is watching the bemused reactions of new arrivals, and guessing how long they’ll endure.

Summerhall, 23, 25 Aug, 6.00am.
