All Turn! (Doorstep Theatre / Emily Summers / Laughing Horse Free Festival)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

This solo show captures the essence of a working-class man, one Albert North, and deals with that period of recent history which isn’t history at all but rather the edges of living memory: based on true accounts, ‘All Turn!’ depicts a life lived in inter-war poverty; hard but also uplifting and funny. Emily Summers sustains this show and excels at the improvised moments of audience interaction. Parcel labels and jam jars represent other people in the story, enhancing the period feel and taking on greater significance. However, although it is said that truth is stranger than fiction, fiction does have some peculiar advantages, like a narrative arc and a conclusive ending; without which this show seems to lack grounding.

Laughing Horse @ The Free Sisters, 13-26 Aug, 12.30pm.
