Firebird (ikou!)

By | Published on Friday 31 August 2012

Compared to other puppet-based shows I’ve seen at the Fringe, this one didn’t feel quite so slick. A lot of love, no doubt, went into making these puppets and crafting the script, and the story – of the only remaining Firebird flying away from a storm and meeting various people on his way – has definite potential. But there is not much of a line to that story; audience members pick cards to determine what direction the bird’s journey takes. This evening the titular Firebird  met the Devil, the Empress and the Eremite, but presumably on any other night different characters could appear in a different order. That results in a series of standalone stories, rather than interconnected episodes of one bigger journey, and I felt more could be made of the whole. All that said, the Firebird’s string-puller is very skilled at making his character move like a real bird, which is the one outstanding feature.
