Sleep To Wake – Robert Browning Remembers Elizabeth (Spanish Cloister Productions)

By | Published on Friday 17 August 2012

Sleep To Wake is well performed and demonstrates a genuine enthusiasm for the subject matter, but its structure is very weak. In the character of Robert Browning, Julian López-Morillas recounts his life through poems and letters, although only half of the play actually seems to concern his wife Elizabeth. He reads from the couple’s letters to one another, but this section goes on for too long and there isn’t much additional analysis of their words provided on stage. As such the play sags in the middle. Fans of the couple will, however, appreciate an opportunity to hear these words delivered convincingly and with warmth.

Hill Street Theatre, 2-13 Aug, 4.15pm.
