The Sewing Machine (Wordsmith’s Theatre Factory and Assembly)

By | Published on Friday 24 August 2012

“Let me not see old age” DR Geraint Jones said. This is a play to inspire such a wish. Expertly made-up, Sandra Prinsloo is completely convincing as octogenarian Magdaleen. While waiting for a buyer to collect her companion of many years, her sewing machine, she starts to relate memories, holding attention despite narrating the story of an ordinary woman, mainly from the comfort of her armchair. Occasionally one may wonder at and condemn her conservative views, especially when the difficult topic of apartheid is raised. But it becomes clear that her role as a mother has been her entire life’s motivation which gives her both her heroism and her quiet dignity as well as the endless sadness of her life.

Assembly George Square, 2-27 Aug (not 13, 20), 2.40pm.
