The Two Worlds Of Charlie F (Bravo 22 Company)
By Adam Bloodworth | Published on Wednesday 22 August 2012
Verbatim theatre, or the art of recreating authentic dialogue on stage, is a great concept. Charlie F would have made a lot more sense if I’d known this in advance, as Bravo 22 use the words of a real soldier injured in service. The intricacies of the descriptive dialogue helps ground the work in a quirky realism, and lines are often sung. “It’s not reliving it, you’re in it, you’re there”, for instance, sounded particularly pertinent in song and enriched the theatrical experience. This musical/play crossover is a humbling experience which dwells not on media-led political context but examines the lives of soldiers themselves; it is less reaction and more action. An affective, unpretentiously patriotic work.
