The Wheelchair On My Face (Fishamble – The New Play Company)

By | Published on Friday 10 August 2012

A lot of plays claim they will make you see differently. This one, quite literally, will. Written and performed by Irishwoman Sonya Kelly, the one-woman show tells the story of her childhood with undiagnosed myopia : a shortsightedness so severe she would throw bread to crisp packets, believing they were ducks. The audience is made to share in Kelly’s pain by her powerful evocation of a world where, because she has never seen them, some things just don’t exist. Charming and poignant, there are heart-warming moments of comedy as Kelly tries to make sense of her situation. The show is almost as much about childhood as disability, and Kelly’s quirky tale gives the audience an enchanting glimpse of the child she was.

Pleasance Courtyard, 1-27 Aug (not 13, 21), 2.10pm.
