Three Tall Women (Tread The Boards Theatre Company)

‘Three Tall Women’ is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Edward Albee piece from 1994, and it’s an unorthodox choice for the Festival, but it’s certainly a very good play. In the first half, two women care for an elderly woman as she reminisces bitterly, and in the second all three actors play the elderly woman at various stages in her life. Theatrically somewhere between Tennessee Williams and Caryl Churchill, Albee’s play gifts the actors three well-developed and distinct female characters, which is unusual in itself, and then uses them to show how we can be totally distinct from our past selves. The characters are played well and with pace, the set is simple but evocative, and the company do the play much justice – even without American accents.
