Phoebe Traquair Song School Murals
By Kirsten Waller | Published on Friday 31 August 2012
Tucked away in the Song School of St Mary’s Cathedral are some of the most beautiful examples of Pre-Raphaelite influence in Edinburgh. The murals, painted in the 1880s, are not usually open to the public, making this month-long exhibition all the more worth catching: the walls are alive with delicate colour and tender human expressions. A short but informative tour takes us through the context – Traquair based her work on the canticle ‘Benedicte, Omnia, Opera’, (meaning the blessing of God), and each wall features a mixture of historic and then-contemporary figures offering heavenly praise. Once the guide has finished, there is time to admire the paintings alone – a peaceful respite from some of the more manic aspects of the Fringe.
