Synagogue Slut (Emily Rose / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Samantha Strachan | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013
I’m not Jewish so a lot of Emily Rose Simon’s jokes went over my head. We requested translation, and she willingly obliged, for the benefit of me and the other audience members, but this meant that she kept interrupting her stories to explain the Hebrew terms; and even once I understood what she was talking about, I was still too bewildered to be amused. Simon travels the UK reviewing synagogues for her blog ‘Belle of the Bimahs’, and mixed with some original songs, her show is an interesting exploration into the idiosyncrasies of Judaism in the UK. But it is for a niche audience, and as much as the show tries to be inclusive, you really need to be part of that community get the most out of it.
Fingers Piano Bar, until 24 Aug (not 5, 12, 19), 7.50pm.
