Sam Rose In The Shadows (Tucked In and Greenwich Theatre)
By Caro Moses | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
Sam Rose is a man of sorrow, compelled to carry around with him a box of sadness. His small son Ivan, distressed by his father’s plight, insists on joining him in a quest to remove the source of his unhappiness. In this strikingly visual, physical piece, Sam and Ivan are puppets, beautifully handled by a highly proficient, likeable cast, who inject moments of humour into what might otherwise be an unrelentingly sad piece. There are some rather scary bits, so a skittish five year old might need a cuddle to get through it, and the central metaphor might confuse a younger child a little; but that could well open a conversation with a child about loss. And even if that element goes right over their heads, it’s still an exciting, arresting show for anyone, of any age.
Bedlam Theatre, until 24 Aug, 12.00pm.
