John Gordillo – Cheap Shots At The Defenceless (John Gordillo / Off The Kerb Productions)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

John Gordillo’s performance had the sweetness of a tired host managing to remain cheerful. Drawing on his relationships with his father and adopted daughter as points of contrast, he alerts us to the disingenuous language that corporations use. Tesco, KFC, Burger King, Barclays – they’re all guilty of it. Gordillo takes flyers, shop signs, and letters from companies, which we normally pass by without thought, and deconstructs them to expose how they manipulate us into feeling fake emotions. He is articulate and pithy, but also very funny, and sweetly infuses his love of Dionne Warwick into the show. Eye-opening in many ways, the show is didactic without being presumptuous. Fantastic.

The Assembly Rooms, until 25 Aug, 7.30pm.
