ED2013 2/5 Reviews ED2013 Comedy Reviews

Rich Hall (Off The Kerb Productions)

Observational comedy is funny when the comedian prompts us to realise that a common situation is ludicrous in (what turns out to be) an obvious way. It fails to be funny when the lunacy has always been self-evident. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t find Rich Hall’s stand-up act all that funny. We’ve all read the papers, so it’s no news to point out how silly the American presidential candidates were last year, or that there were two candidates called Rick who were also laughably religious. His observations didn’t tend to unravel anything, and long-winded jokes would often just end with gratuitous swearing. Though he’s obviously a popular comedian, and his Fringe crowd seemed pleased, I found little joy in this show.

Assembly George Square, until 25 Aug, 9.30pm.
