Shhhh – An Improvised Silent Movie (i Bugiardini)

By | Published on Monday 26 August 2013

Though an interesting idea, and skilfully performed, this show just doesn’t quite work. There are myriad variations on the standard improv games around: improvised movies, musicals, even Shakespearean plays. While these are all successful, the improvised Silent Movie just doesn’t live up to its potential; it’s cleverly presented, with a talented group of performers silently acting out the show, to live piano accompaniment, while another member of the troupe occasionally drops in caption cards to move the plot along.  Yet while watching it, I was only laughing occasionally. I wasn’t caught up in the events unfolding on stage. I wasn’t gripped or engaged. Instead, I found myself dispassionately noting the skill of those involved, without any real sense of pleasure.

Gryphon Venues at the Point Hotel, until 24 Aug, 4.45pm.
