The Distraction Club (Blond Ambition)

By | Published on Friday 16 August 2013

Guest host of this musical comedy variety night Phil Nichol starts proceedings with a genuinely unpleasant song, bringing the bar down so low most of the other acts vault it by comparison. Kate Lucas plays twee songs about hating people, from babies to exes. Ant Dewson changes gear by playing the geek card, until the inevitable Jimmy Savile joke comes out and we’re back down at the bottom again. Donny Donkins comes on and dances more than he sings, but offends whenever he does either, before Arthur Smith closes with a bewildering set of Leonard Cohen songs, played almost straight-faced. As a late-night show for drunk people it’s probably fine, but there are definitely better elsewhere.

The Voodoo Rooms, until 25 Aug (not 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21), Midnight.
