ED2013 5/5 Reviews ED2013 Musical Reviews
Michelle McManus @ The Musicals (Michelle McManus)
By Eilidh Johnstone | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013
Michelle McManus has the voice of a Broadway diva and the friendliness of a Glasgow girl-next-door, and it’s a winning combination. Between blowing the audience away with her songs (almost literally, in the intimate basement of the New Town Bar), she chatters with a humour and humanity that make you want to go up and hug her. It’s clear that Michelle loves her music, and she encourages her audience to sing along to familiar Broadway classics. A live accompanist might have allowed for more expression, but the recordings used give Michelle’s voice the spectacular orchestral backing it deserves, and the atmosphere in the venue is electric from start to finish. A wonderful performance that truly deserved the standing ovation it received.
The New Town Bar, until 25 Aug, times vary.
