The Sloans Project (NOISE – New Opera in Scotland Events)

By | Published on Tuesday 27 August 2013

Originally set and staged in Sloan’s, the oldest bar and restaurant in Glasgow, the show is now transferred to the Scottish Arts Club. The piece is comprised of five operatic vignettes – some funny and romantic, others dark and dramatic. The atmosphere is very friendly and informal; the peppy narrator conjures a sense of optimism and nostalgia, even after the heavier scenes. The show is primarily driven by exceptionally strong performances, but there’s also much experimentation; musicians will rub glasses filled with enough water to play certain notes, creating a glassy texture to the score. Sadly though, the lyrics let the piece down, being far too mundane and repetitive. However, the performances and atmosphere are strong enough to still be enjoyable.

The Scottish Arts Club, 15, 18 Aug, times vary.
