ED2013 2/5 Reviews ED2013 Dance & Physical Theatre Reviews
Somnambules And The 7 Deadly Sins (Karavan Ensemble)
By Lizzie Milton | Published on Saturday 10 August 2013
An impressive, disturbing and beautiful performance that seems utterly devoid of content. The show displays two slick performers manically interacting with various lights, costumes and props. But whilst images allude to ideas such as birth, lust or death, there is no coherent thread. For a show that claims to explore what we’re made of, it only presents the surface level ideas and emotions that make up our identities. The soundtrack is unnecessarily uncomfortable, often just the sound of bombs and screams; and for a show that doesn’t appear to be overly pessimistic about human nature, it doesn’t fit. The performers show great physical prowess, but a great deal more is promised than is delivered.
Summerhall, until 25 Aug (not 12, 19), 9.30pm.
