Ballad Of The Burning Star (Theatre Ad Infinitum)

By | Published on Monday 19 August 2013

The show is remarkable. If you’re expecting anything like ‘Translunar Paradise’ (2011) don’t, because ‘Ballad’ is such a clear reaction against it. ‘Translunar’ was a safe story, with hugely tender emotional content: here, we’re presented with a controversial topic, told in a way that actively prevents emotional connection. We’re welcomed into the cabaret presided over by tyrannical diva Star and her increasingly disgruntled Starlettes, who regale us with the harrowing yet oddly detached story of an Israeli boy growing up in the midst of the West Bank conflict. Rather than simply inducing sadness, this show toys with us, trapping the audience between laughter and tears. A phenomenal show from an astonishingly versatile company.

Pleasance Dome, until 26 Aug (not 13, 20), 5.15pm.
