Beijing Cake (Year Of The Horse Theatre)

This is a fresh take on the experiences of being an immigrant. We follow an American diplomat, Lori, who decides to settle in China after a breakup. Constructed as a caricature of The American, Lori is unable to speak Chinese and is ignorant of the culture. Yet we cannot simply dismiss her as laughably foolish, for we are caught up in sympathy for her. Isolated and lonely, she desperately tries to fit into a country that doesn’t want her. With the aesthetic of exaggerated gestures from silent movies, this is an innovative, jolting play that puts great trust in its audience. It would benefit from developing more deeply the motives for the characters’ decisions but, overall, it has the makings of a very distinguished play.

theSpace On The Mile, until 24 Aug, 6.10pm.
