Blazing Grannies (F Mary Callan)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

‘Blazing Grannies’ is anything but blazing; it’s a calm and affable forty minutes of Biblical drama, which Christians will most likely find refreshing and thought-provoking. This one-woman show aims to bring the age-old problems presented in the Bible into the 21st century through a series of soliloquies, and in this endeavour Mary Callan is not always successful: the portrayal of obscure Biblical figures means that, in order to fully appreciate the performance, the audience really needs to be very familiar with the characters already. Yet, with heartfelt scripts and a commendable performance, Callan knows how to keep an audience interested, and how to give her ancient stories a new lease of life.

St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, until 26 Aug, 3.00pm.
