Story Shakespeare – Pericles (Year Out Drama Company)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Tuesday 20 August 2013
With this light hearted, ensemble adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s lesser known comedies, ‘Story Shakespeare: Pericles’ does a good job of keeping the audience chuckling throughout. The modern touches are applied with a careful hand, helping and never hindering the story. The lampshade hanging, genre savvy Fisherman’s Chorus keep the story moving at a good clip and paper over some of Shakespeare’s more absurd plotting. They also keep the audience in touch with the ever changing cast of players. Unfortunately, the endless swapping of roles among the young actors means that no one ever gets a chance to shine, resulting in tepid performances and never letting us really connect with the characters. Overall, though, this is a fun little production.
C too, until 17 Aug, 10.15am.
